Week 2 :-: Stoppers

Our first lesson focused on defining servant leadership. Personally, I was reminded that everyone is a leader since we were all created by the same God and in His image. It follows naturally from this conclusion that everyone therefore has both the capacity and responsibility of working to become a better leader! This is a proactive choice that can only be sustained by intrinsic motivation. Are you motivated to become better at leading both yourself and others? Per John C. Maxwell, "Leadership Ability Determines a Person’s Level of Effectiveness",  this implies that you can only take yourself, family, organization and the people that you lead, as far as the level of your current leadership. Drawing from this, we can conclude that no matter how hard you try to achieve more, you first need to work on intentionally dealing with the limitations on your ability to lead yourself first, then others. Without this, you will be living in a dream world full of a lot of talk ...

Week 9 :-: Discernment: Leading with Wisdom

Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?"    1 King 3:9 Objectives: Understand the definition and importance of discernment for a Servant Leader. Develop habits that help with discernment Use the SWOT analysis to help with discernment and growth (c) Freeshapetest.com - Go to the link at the end to find out more.   Flashback… I love to meditate on the story of Zelophehad's daughters found in the book of Numbers (27) in the Bible. Israel was about to enter the Promised Land and the people had started seriously thinking about their inheritance. At that time, their law only permitted males to inherit, meaning Zelophehad's daughters (he had died leaving behind five daughters), did not qualify to inherit anything. The law was clear, their fate was sealed. They however decided to petition Moses on what appeared to them...

Week 1:-: Introduction

Welcome to #Team21 s training on Servant Leadership . We trust you will enjoy this journey. You have been assigned a mentor to be with you throughout this experience, feel free to discuss any challenges related to your training. They are also there to review your work, provide feedback and encourage you at every step of the way. What is your definition of leadership?  Write it down prior to watching the video below. Now watch the video and answer the questions that follow. Please sign all your posts so we know who is commenting.  1. Who is/are the leaders in the video? Why? 2. How has this impact your previous definition?  3. Based on this new experience, who is a leader? Legacies don't fall from the sky. "Failing to plan, is planning to fail"  (Alan Lakein). Servant leadership starts from the heart and determines the leader’s character (integrity, humility, courage etc). This (character) precedes a focus on building others (relationships) executing le...

Week 4 :-: Mission, visions and goals

How time flies!  I am certain you have heard this before. Time generally seems to fly when we are busy, but when we are not, time seems to be at a standstill. Why do we feel that way? Living without vision creates a false impression that you have a lot of time.  In the last 3 weeks, we saw that everyone is a leader because they are all created in God's image. We equally considered how limitations on our life negatively impact our efficiency as individuals. Last week, we looked at what makes for true leadership i.e. influence. This is not some kind of tool we use to manipulate people into doing what they do not want to do. A servant leader's concern is the well being of his/her people . In a bid to develop our ability to influence positively, we looked at developing and increasing our emotional intelligence. A lot in a few weeks, I must say. We are riding on, no breaks! Maxwell observed that " Leadership Develops Daily, Not in a Day "  Nothing either go...

Week 3 :-: Influence versus Authority

"The True Measure of Leadership Is Influence – Nothing More Nothing Less' ~ John Maxwell We start this week's lesson with the two beautiful quotes above from Ken Blanchard and John Maxwell. What do you think about them?  Most traditional definitions of leadership almost always have something to do with either position, title or power. Think about it for a moment. While titles can be assigned, it is clear that true leadership cannot be assigned, it has to be earned . You can hardly force anyone to consistently follow you. They may try for a while, but do you know what happens when you are not looking?  Tough leader? A servant leader understands that being in a position of leadership does not guarantee that people will follow you and if people are not following you, you are basically wasting everyone's time. If your ability to get things done is solely dependent either on your power, position or authority, imagine what will happen when you are gone. They will ...
