Week 1:-: Introduction

Welcome to #Team21s training on Servant Leadership
We’re thrilled to have you embark on this transformative journey. Throughout this training, you’ll have the support of a dedicated mentor who will guide you, review your submissions, and walk alongside you every step of the way.

To make the most of this experience, we strongly encourage you to keep a physical journal or notebook to document your thoughts, questions, and learnings. Additionally, you’ll be required to post weekly reflections on your blog and LinkedIn.

Welcome again, and we pray that this journey leads to profound spiritual. personal and professional transformation as it has for so many others before you.

What is your definition of leadership? Write it down prior to watching the video below.

Now watch the video and answer the questions that follow. Please do sign all your posts so we know who is commenting.

1. Who is/are the leaders in the video? Why?
2. How has this influenced your previous definition?
3. Based on what you saw and how this has influenced your thinking, who is a leader?

Our focus of course will be on servant leadership and we want to encourage you to be intentional about change as you engage in the process of learning, un-learning and relearning. What you become depends on a large extent on the changes you choose to make.

Are you a leader? What makes you one or not?

Servant leadership is a journey that starts from the heart and determines the leader’s character (integrity, humility, courage etc). This (character) precedes a focus on building others (relationships) executing leadership tasks, improving processes and hence transforming society.
Servant Leadership is therefore radically different from "personality type" driven leadership paradigms, which focus on learning various skills to “fix” the leader’s public image and help them get things done.

We start with the declaration that: Everyone is a leader, yes you are a leader! Why? Because we were all created, by God (in His image), and have a specific assignment. In the creation story of the book of Genesis in the Bible, it is recorded that man was created, by God, in His image and likeness. He also gives man the assignment to dominate over everything He created. Notice that God's image is in every single human being, with no exceptions, and everyone of us was created for a specific purpose. Your position in society, possessions, talents, skills, titles, connections and knowledge do not make you or anyone else more human than another.

We may have different skills, aptitudes, knowledge and so forth but we were all created by one God, in His image and with the same ability to influence others and create positive impact albeit at different levels. You have the potential and just need to make that choice to reflect God's image. In order to maximize our potential as individuals however, we need to take proactive, rather than either passive or reactive steps, towards our desire to manifest our God given ability to lead and hence effect positive change be it within ourselves, in others, our spheres of influence and our communities. This process will require patience, intentionality and commitment. If your goal is to experience long lasting change (results), the desire should come from within (intrinsic motivation) and be driven by your values and mission. We will talk about this in greater detail throughout this training.
Are you intentional and personally committed to your growth?
Any object in motion will stop somewhere, someday when it runs "out of steam".  What kind of legacy do you plan to leave when your day comes? Do you want to be known as someone who was bold enough to take charge when leadership was required? Do you want to hear the words "well done", from The Creator of the universe when your time on earth expires? Do you want to join God in bringing positive impact in your family, community and different spheres of influence?
If you said either yes, or maybe then this training is indeed for you.

Legacies don't fall from the sky. "Failing to plan, is planning to fail" (Alan Lakein).

  4. What is your definition of leadership?
Leadership is the motivation of and leading people, through our actions, to become better. It is also taking responsibility of ones actions with integrity.

Who is/are the leader(s) in the video? Why?
The little school boy is the leader.
This is because he identified the trunk (obstacle) as the root cause of the traffic, and moved towards it. Though the trunk was heavy, he believed he could clear it by pushing. His action inspired onlookers who were moved to join him. With their collective efforts, they displaced the obstacle and circulation returned on the road.

Has this changed your previous definition of leadership?
    No

Based on your new experience, who is a leader?
A leader is any person who can take initiative to resolve societal problems.

  7. What's your definition of leadership?
It is the ability TO DETERMINE/BE SENSITIVE to a need. Live to serve in the area where you sensed the need and live to see others excel in that domain.

Who is/are the leader(s) in the video? Why?
The young boy because he saw a need and gave all he had to attend to the need.

Has this changed your previous definition of leadership?
    Not really

Based on your new experience, who is a leader?
Anyone who is ready to give their all to change a situation and influence others through that.

  10. What's the definition of a leadership? It is the ability to teach others by example, putting others' needs before yours, having God-like or Christ-like natures because if He created us in His image and likeness and He is our leader,it's just to say we share His characteristics.

Who is/are the leader(s) in the video?why? From my observation, the leaders in the video are everybody who came out to help remove the tree from the road. I say so because non didn't hesitate to come help out when they saw the young boy trying to remove the tree from the road. That's a virtue of a leader and also, nobody is excellent all round... We all are gifted in one way or the other, that combined together will bring out something beautiful just like how everybody helped out and finally succeeded in removing the tree from the road. Has this changed your previous definition of leadership? Not really...

Based on your new experience, who is a leader? A leader is someone who doesn't only lead by example but also copy good examples.

  11. What is your definition of leadership ?: Someone's ability to influence a group to move in a certain direction and achieve great results.

  12. The leader in the video is the young boy who identified the source of the traffic jam and decided to take action not considering his own strength ( or lack of strength), not considering the rain, he stepped out and start pushing the tree to remove it from the road. So doing, he encouraged others to do the same and together they removed the fallen tree that was causing the traffic jam.

  13. Has my previous definition changed? Yes, I would complete it by adding that :
    1. the leader must have the vision, must see what needs to be done;
    2. the leader influences others by showing and being the example he wants others to follow to achieve the expected results;
    3. the leader is the first to take action, to step out;
    4. the leader works with others and needs others to succeed.

  15. Who is/are the leaders in the video? Why?
The leader in the video is indeed the young student who first went to the tree trunk, because he was the first to take action - the example - and he inspired others to take actions.

Has this changed your previous definition of leadership?
Yes, it has. I thought a leader was an experienced person who knows what to do in every situation, who always knows the next move. Here I saw a young boy ignoring the simple fact that he is not strong enough to move a huge tree trunk. But his active concern for a problem that affected many people finally inspired people.

Based on your new experience, who is a leader?
A leader is someone who just tries to help the best way he knows, actively looking for solutions and inspiring people around him to do the same.

  16. Who is/ are the leaders in the video? Why?
The leader in the video is the little school boy. Out of many who looked defeated by the problem the huge log of wood was causing, he was the first to take an initiative to solve the problem though he knew it was daunting task. He ran to push the log of wood away but was limited his strength. His action he drew the attention of all( the old and young alike to come join him) and together they rolled the log away

Has this changed your previous definition of leadership?

Yes because I thought a leader's role was to instruct others and the others carryout the instructions given.

Based on your experiences who is a leader?
-A leader is someone who has the the ability to influence others by the initiatives he/she takes to achieve an objective.
    - A leader is not a boss who instructs.
    - A leader through his actions, inspire others

    Are you a leader?
    No
I like to become one. That's why I am part of this course.

  17. Leadership is the art of moltivating a group of people to act today achieving a common goal.

The little boy is the leader in this video. Though small as he is he saw that there was an obstacle that needed to be addressed. He took upon himself despites the heavy rain, he beat the odd and went ahead to face what was hindering a large population from moving. This simple art that he put up made others to follow his initiative and at the end the obstacle was removed.

This has greatly changed my mindset of who a leader is . Blc bl4 I thought a leader is only seniors, intellectuals, . And also their role is bend on commanding others to do things the way they want it done. But I realised a leader doesn't really necessarily matter about age or any acquired skills. It's the art you put up for others to follow that earns you the position of a leader.

Based on my experience I can say a leader is anyone who influences others by acting as an example.

Yes but striving to be a better.
I am a leader in the sense that I have the qualities of a leader in me but I just need to work on it to be a better leader that is why I took this course in order to help me learn more

  18. 1) According to the video watched I will say everyone is a leader. Why because the boy saw and identified the problem and decided to step out from the bus( his comfort zone) to show what needed to be done since some paid attention to the log of tree that had blocked the way and decided to do nothing about it. All they did was to pay attention to their personal activities until the moment all saw a little boy with his little strength trying to push the big log of tree from the road. Some laughed at him but others decided to join him. Thanks to the bold step the boy took we could notice the problem was solved and many were happy at the end as they noticed they helped to bring a change and put a smile on someone's face.
2 ) Yes it has. After watching the video I realised we all are leaders and are called to lead by example by being the change we want to see. Also, I can say being a leader doesn't only involve adults, kids as well as teenagers are involved. All begins with "Taking a decision"!Then after comes taking a step by making the necessary action to see the change being implemented in the identified area.
    3) Based on this I can say a leader is someone that doesn't only leads by example but he or she is someone who decides to step out from his/ her comfort zone, sacrifices himself/ herself to show the path or the appropriate step that needs to be taken for a change to be seen. The leader also shows how it should be done just as the little boy did.
